Mountain City Traditional Arts (MCTA) is diving into the New Year and offering new opportunities for instruction in the traditional arts. Workshops and gatherings featuring crocheting, rug hooking, and spinning have already been scheduled and the venue is seeking traditional musicians and singers interested in using the venue for regular jams and sessions.

Mountain City Traditional Arts will host, "Help for Crocheters" on Thursday evenings in January from 6:30 PM to 8 PM. If you already know how to chain, work a single crochet or double crochet, but can't understand those pesky patterns or have trouble figuring out what "increase evenly in round" means, come by for a quick explanation and help with an ongoing project. Carolyn Groves will lead this work session helping new crocheters unravel the mysteries of dc, sc, trb, hdc and more.
A Rug Hooking Basics workshop will be held on Saturday, January 16, 10 AM - 4 PM. Learn the easy technique of pulling up strips of wool to create loops... repeat enough times and it becomes a room-sized rug. Susan Feller of Ruckman Mill Farm in Augusta, WV, will offer the beginner's or refresher course. Participants will receive a kit including an 8" square design (your choice from three), wool strips, and rug hook. Bring scissors and enthusiasm. A 12" quilters hoop or frame will be available for the class period. Feller and others are hoping to generate enough locals interested to be able to meet regularly; encouraging each other and learning more about this traditional art/craft form. Kit fee $25. Workshop fee: $10. Class is limited to 8. Please contact MCTA in advance to register.
Spinning with Fiber, an informal gathering of those interested in learning the fundamentals of spinning or perfecting their technique, meets Wednesday evenings at 7 PM. Artists Theo Ewers and Missy Martz will be on hand to provide encouragement and recommendations on technique and materials. Participants are expected to provide their own supplies.
In addition, several patrons have expressed interest in attending weekly or monthly music jams and sessions – including a potential drumming circle. The staff at Mountain City Traditional Arts strongly encourages those interested in coordinating or participating in such groups to contact the venue at (301) 687-8040, via email at
