Jesse Smith and Ryan McGiver, a top-notch duo featuring traditional Irish fiddle music and songs, will perform at Mountain City Traditional Arts, 25 E. Main Street, Frostburg, Sunday, February 12, at 3PM.
Baltimore Native Jesse Smith grew up immersed in the thriving Irish music tradition of that city, but his own love for the music led him to Ireland, where he has lived for more than thirteen years now. With musicians for parents, Jesse started playing the fiddle at an early age, studying with renowned teacher and player Brendan Mulvihill. Following his passion, in 1998 his appreciation for traditional music took him to Ireland to stay, where he has made his mark as a fiddler touring and recording with the well-respected Irish band Danú.
Based on this side of the pond, singer and guitarist Ryan McGiver has toured extensively throughout the US, Asia, and Europe over the past decade playing a mixture of traditional Irish and American music . He has recorded and shared stages with an eclectic mix of traditional, folk, and rock musicians including Kevin Crawford, Cillian Vallely, Susan McKeown, Edel Fox, and Shahzad Ismaily, to name a few.
Melding years of talent and experience, together this duo brings a remarkably powerful performance to Mountain Maryland. The free event is made possible with the generous support of 91.9 WFWM and Culture Ireland.
Dedicated to the education, sales, documentation and perpetuation of traditional arts in the mountain region, Mountain City Traditional Arts is a program of Frostburg State University with support from the Allegany Arts Council, FrostburgFirst: A Main Street Community, the FSU Foundation, and the Maryland Traditions Program of the Maryland State Arts Council.
