The latest Cotton Jones album, Tall Hours In The Glowstream is a great pop album full of warm melodic soundscapes and rich harmonies. It was released August 24, 2010 - soon after the band’s recent tour ended.
Tall Hours In The Glowstream is the Cumberland natives’ third release – their second release on the Seattle-based record label Suicide Squeeze Records. The album was recorded in Cumberland, MD; Winterville, GA; and Fenwick Island, DE.
According to the band’s website, The Glowstream is a stream with a dead-end that is “centered between North and South Cumberland” and is near that section of Cumberland where one can see the church steeples and I-68. It’s a thinking spot with shade and a good view of the Queen City.
There is a hint of lo-fi goodness throughout the sound drenched album. Michael Nau and Whitney McGraw’s vocals have a damp airy vibe. Sound-wise, it’s like summer captured in wax (or digital bits).
“Somehow To Keep It Going” could have been a hit on FM radio in 1975 and should be today. Other standout tracks include the opening number “Sail Of The Silver Morning,” “Man Climbs Out Of The Winter,” the instrumental “Goethe Nayburs.” “Place At The End Of The Street,” and “Glorylight and Christie.”
It’s refreshing to hear original music being written, performed, and/or recorded in Western Maryland. Cotton Jones will be touring again soon – tour dates and music samples can be found here. Tall Hours In The Glowstream is available on CD/ LP/ digital download. Yes- LP… Tall Hours In The Glowstream sounds great in analog!
