Library System Slates Fall Computer Classes PDF Print E-mail

The Allegany County Library System’s schedule for Computer Classes during September and October is now available. All of the one-hour classes are free of charge. Pre-registration is required for all classes. For Frostburg classes call 301-687-0790, Washington Street classes 301-777-1200, and South Cumberland classes 301-724-1607. Space is limited. Classes scheduled include:

“Heritage Quest Online” provides a unique, growing collection of research for tracing family history. Patrons will learn how to access Heritage Quest and gain valuable knowledge on searching their own family tree. This class will be held at the Washington Street Branch on Wednesday, September 1 at 11:00AM.

“Introduction to the Computer” will cover the basics, including an overview of the parts of a computer, desktop, navigation, and much more. This class is designed for the novice user. It will be held at the South Cumberland Branch on Tuesday, September 7 at 10 a.m., the Frostburg Branch on Monday, September 13 at 11 a.m., and at the Washington Street Branch on Wednesday, September 15 at 11 a.m.

“Introduction to the Internet”, a class designed for people with no prior experience using the Internet, will allow patrons to learn about browsers, search engines, and hyperlinks. We will perform simple searches on a search engine, and enter web site addresses for direct access to sites. The class will be held at South Cumberland Branch on Tuesday, September 14 at 10 a.m., Frostburg Branch on Monday, September 20 at 11 a.m., and the Washington Street Branch on Wednesday, September 22 at 11 a.m.

“Learning the Library Webpage” is an introduction to the website and online catalog of the Allegany County Library System. Learn how to search for titles, place requests, renew your items, and manage your account completely online. This class will be held at the South Cumberland Branch on Tuesday, September 21 at 10 a.m.

“Fun Things To Do Online” will show you how to check out some fun and interesting websites! If time permits, patrons can also share their favorite Internet site. The class will be held at the South Cumberland Branch Tuesday, September 28 at 10 a.m.

“Saving Your Work” will help if you are confused about using floppy disks, saving to the hard drive, or burning CDs, etc? This class will discuss the pros and cons of each type of data storage, best practices and tips, and will teach participants how to do it all.  Class will be held at the Frostburg Branch on Monday, October 4 at 11 a.m. and at the Washington Street Branch on Wednesday, October 6 at 11 a.m.

“Managing Documents/Files” will show how to keep your documents organized on your PC. Come learn some simple steps to find your files and documents easier. Class will be held at the Frostburg Branch Monday, October 11 at 11 a.m. and the Washington Street Branch Wednesday, October 13 at 11a.m.

“Introduction to Microsoft Word 2007” is an introduction to using word processing software. Learn what’s hiding under the Office Button, the Ribbon (which replaced the normal toolbars) and the Quick Access Toolbar, also how to change font and font size, toolbars, and more. This class, geared towards the novice user, will be held at the Frostburg Branch on Monday, October 18 at 11 a.m. and at the Washington Street Branch on Wednesday, October 20 at 11 a.m.

“Microsoft Word Intermediate” will be held for those who have completed Introduction to Microsoft Word or who have equivalent skills. The class covers copying and pasting, using templates, saving files, and in-depth exploration of  toolbars. Class will be held at the Frostburg Branch on Monday, October 25 at 11 a.m. and at the Washington Street Branch on Wednesday, October 27 at 11 a.m.

The popularity of our weekly computer classes inspired us to offer our courses to a wider audience by posting lessons online. Now, if our classes in the library fill up, everyone with a computer and Internet access can still enjoy free computer classes.
