Haiti Benefit Concert FlierOn January 12, 2010 an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale hit Port-au-Prince, Haiti. An estimated 3 million people were affected by the quake. Buildings collapsed, withpeople trapped inside; the hospitals suffered severe damage; and morgues became overwhelmed with mass casualties. Haiti already suffering from being the poorest country in the western hemisphere was now wracked by untold devastation. Efforts have been underway to give aid and comfort to the people of Haiti, but there is still so much more that needs to be done, in the long?term, to rebuild a nation.

Moved by the devastation of the Haitian nation, the students and faculty of the Peace Studies Club of Allegany College of Maryland have decided to host a benefit event on the Cumberland campus to raise funds for the earthquake victims of Haiti and for the local County United Way. The Peace Studies Club will work together with members of the community, as well as fellow students who will serve as volunteers (with over 100 students!), business owners who will serve as contributing donors, and other student organizations who will serve as volunteers and organizers to promote and implement what will be an incredible and worthwhile experience for the ACM campus and for the Cumberland community at large.

The all day benefit event, from 11 am to 8 pm, will feature 15 bands and musical acts of varying styles of music.  Ten local area 2 dimensional and 3 dimensional artists will display their work and make them available for purchase.  Food vendors serving all types of carnival food will also be on?site. Activities for the young crowd, including a moon bounce, face painting and children stories written by Haitian authors and read by ACM education students.   The event will have a festival?like atmosphere and will feature something for ever one of all ages.
