Heifer International was founded by Dan West, who had an epiphany while working as a relief worker:  people don't need a hand out, but a hand up...they don't need a cup, what they need is a cow! And so the work began for Heifer International over 60 years ago.  Today the organization has helped more than 9.2 million families in over 150 countries as it works to care for the earth and eliminate hunger by providing families with various animals: such as cows, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, and beehives. A cornerstone of Heifer is that the families are to "pass on the gift" to another needy family when their animal has offspring. This has a ripple effect of giving that change the community.
Â
It is in this spirit of "passing on the gift" that the Frostburg United Methodist Church held its annual upscale Yard Sale and Silent Auction to benefit Heifer International was held on December 6, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Sale generated over $4,000, with donations still being counted.

The yard sale portion included numerous tables of donated household items, furniture, baby items and paperback books. The silent auction features generously donated artisan items by local artists. Silent auction bids were accepted for artwork by Linda Stewart, Bobbi Dubins, and Bev Walker; photography by Bill Merlavage; jewelry by Robin Price, and artisan pottery by Patrick Faville and Steve Sullivan.  Additional items up for bid, including a book signed by astronaut James Luvell, a one week stay at the WISP resort, and a week stay at a private condo at Myrtle Beach.

A most impressive Heifer quilt will also be on display for the next year. The quilt is the result of a year-long effort by Susie Baker and the entire "Creative Needle" guild members who lovingly created a Heifer International-inspired quilt that features panels depicting all of the animals of Heifer. This alone was worthy of a visit to the sale.

Those that were unable to attend this event but would like to make a monetary contribution to the Heifer fundraiser, please contact Tom Kozikowski or Gretchen Seibert at 301-689-6139 as donations are still being accepted.
